Most of my students who learn german with me learn it for a certain purpose. Around 90% in fact. On the other hand most of my students who learn for example french with me learn it for fun, or the beauty of the language. What is your experience?
I hate to say it, but maybe a lot of people like learning Romantic languages more because they sound nicer as they “roll” off the tongue. Every language can have its beautiful side, though. I had to learn French because it was mandatory in school and since French is another official language in Canada. It’s pretty useful because French is quite common in former French territories all around the world, whereas I don’t think it is quite the same for German.
What sort of purposes do your students mainly want to learn German for?
